The battle to secure the rights of adopted children in New South Wales to have the opportunity to be raised by both a mother and a father has taken another backwards step, with the NSW Upper House voting in favour of gay adoption.
Clover Moore’s same sex adoption bill breezed through the state’s upper house last night with a comfortable 22 to 15 vote margin. The bill will now go back before the lower house to secure support for minor amendments secured in the other chamber.
A media report today claims that, “Members of the [Legislative] council complained of receiving hundreds of emails opposing the legislation”. Perhaps such legislators would have less to complain about if their votes reflected the overwhelming public opposition to the bill.
One politician who was swayed by public opinion was lower house member for Tamworth Peter Draper, who voted against the bill despite expressing some sympathy towards same sex parenting during his speech in the parliament. He said:
“From my reading of the legislation the bill does not seem to contain the overtly sinister intentions that some believe it contains. Nevertheless, after taking into account the overwhelming views expressed to me from local constituents, I cannot support the legislation. I will oppose the bill.”
These comments show how important it is to speak out against harmful legislation. ACL thanks supporters for their tremendous support of our Kids’ Right Count campaign, which has generated more than 40,000 emails to NSW state politicians, and even caused our email website to crash.
Earlier in the week ACL issued a media release with attached letter calling on MLCs to reject the same sex adoption bill because it was not in the best interests of children. It would appear that the campaign, whilst hugely beneficial, has not caused this terrible legislation to be blocked.

Comment . . .
It is indeed a sad day for our nation . . . a shameful decision of a state Parliament of Australia to pass such a clearly immoral law – one which the true and living God has not failed to notice – and those who support these things will be held accountable by Him. He has clearly warned that anyone who offends one of these little ones or causes them to stumble “it would be better fo a millstone to be hung about his neck and for him to be cast into the depths of the sea” – this is how seriously
our God views the exploitation or abuse in any form of our children and any other vulnerable citizen.
One can only hope that there will be such a backlash against this abhorrent decision that the legislation is overturned BEFORE it is used to place even 1 child in this unthinkable position. And that those responsible will see the light and repent and turn back to the living God for true wisdom and God honouring legislation in their governance of this country.
This Bill is contrary to The Natural Law – God’s plan for Creation and thus is bad legislation. It is natural for parents to directly and indirectly influence their children to follow the parent’s way of life. Is it not reasonable to explect an elevation of child abuse resulting from “gay” same-sex adoptive parents? With the main concern being the “best interest of children”, how these politicians could vote for such a Bill is beyond my comprehension.
Thank you so much for saying it as God sees it! How sad it is that our most vulnerable i.e. our children will now be placed with same sex parents. When voting this legislation in the selfish desires of the adults and not the best interest of our children have been considered. We know of a family of two mothers who broke up and who now have different partners. The child in that family has 4 mothers! What on earth are we doing!! Our hearts break for these children who will now live in this situation of two mothers or two fathers. How these decisions must grieve Our Father in Heaven!
