Institution of Marriage is linked to Children for the Sake of Children
In an extraordinary show of unity, more than fifty Australian national leaders of Christian Churches endorsed a document on the importance of marriage as a legal institution because it promotes and protects the identity of children and their internationally recognised right to know, have access to and be nurtured by both their mother and father.
The leaders note that the law has adapted in many ways to accommodate relationships other than marriage including making provisions for persons in de facto and same sex relationships to have access to the same services that are available to married couples. However marriage remains different and the legal recognition of marriage is needed for the purpose of securing that relationship and the children’s relationship within the family unit to both a mother and a father. Children have a right to the complementary experiences of mothering and fathering as far as possible.
They point out that marriage is found across all cultures and ages. Marriage pre-dates the State and does not require the State for its legitimacy. The pre-eminent reason for the State to be involved is to legally protect children and ensure that parents fulfil their obligation to care for and nurture them. Redefining marriage would seriously undermine it and the family unit.
The endorsed document on why marriage should continue to be recognized as a different relationship was prepared by a group of well qualified persons from the Catholic, Anglican, and Presbyterian Churches who came together under the auspices of the Australian Christian Lobby and with the support of senior denominational leaders to prepare a resource paper.
In a letter to priests, ministers and pastors, the Church leaders note that revising the definition of marriage has been presented simply as a justice issue of non-inclusion. They say that there has been little in the media about the fact that this would mean revising what marriage means, so that marriage would be about romance only and no longer focussed on establishing a relationship in which children are nurtured by both their mother and father.
The leaders said that there is an urgent need for all those who hold positions of leadership in the Churches to encourage parishioners to write to or speak to their local members of Federal Parliament in order to defend the legal institution of marriage because it protects the interests of children.
The Revising Marriage? document is available under the Resources tab at australianmarriage.org.au

Some brave women and men above. None of them should be surprised at the scorn that will follow.
Well I must say it is heartening to know that there are 50 brave clergy men (and women) prepared to make a stand for marriage in this country.
Personally,I had hoped there may be a few more.
From everything I have been reading on the mainstream media, websites, newspapers blogs and the like, the number of people describing themselves as gay- Catholics, gay- Christians, gay-pentecostals , gay ministers, etc I was starting to believe that many if not most Australian clergy are actually preaching a pro-gay message?
I wonder if this is the case, or is it just that many have chosen to stay deliberately silent on the issue and so their ‘flocks’ are being lead by others on this issue?
I have not heard any sermon on this issue for at least 20 yrs. When I spoke to someone at church about this, they corrected me and told me there had been a mention of homosexuality in a sermon about 5 years ago- I am just sorry that I missed it.
Oh well, maybe I just have to wait another 5 years to hear from my minister on this issue.
Just a brief comment many of these Church Leaders actually represent thousands of other Credential MInisters of their various churches who also support their stand. Our fellowship alone which is just one of the names listed represents 1200 separate congregations and over 2000 clergy men and women.
Where are the Baptists and Church of Christ leaders? I hope they did not elect to be not involved. I am a part-time preacher/ teacher in a small church affiliated with the Baptist Churches, and I whole heartedly support the document on marriage.
I have stood as a candidate for the CDP four times and have been appalled at some leaders of churches and a Bible College who refused to stand up for Godly principles. God is still looking for people to stand in the gap before Him on behalf of Australia as per Ez 22:30.
Thank you ACL for inspiring believers to speak up. May we not grow weary of such a small task. “Let the redeemed of the Lord say so.” Psalm 107:2.
Thank you for all your hard work in support of traditional marriage. All Christian and God believeing leaders should organise all their people to fight satan on this critical issue. The children depend on us.
Thank you for the hard work on this issue, the results are pleasing but we should not deceive ourselves into thinking the battle is anywhere near won. We must stay alert.
I did notice that marriage is referred to as a “relationship” a couple of times in the document. I have been trying to impress upon my own local MP that marriage is actually much more than a relationship. “Marriage is a union – the union of two different but complimentary people, a man and a woman, who come together in a way that creates a new entity, a family. When the Bible states (Genesis 2:24) ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh’, it is not simply issuing an article of faith to be believed. It is making a statement of fact that is evidenced in all of human history.”
I hope I’m not just being picky, I think it is important to realise that marriage is something same sex couples are physically, emotionally and intelectually incapable of creating, even if we were to grant them the ceremony and the license.
Thoroughly endorse the Marriage document and petition success, but it was embarrassing to see the representative from your group attempting to answer questions on ABC 1 Breakfast program this week.
His obvious nervousness prevented him from clearly explain his logic with conviction. Such an important topic does not require a Church minister who cannot present himself adequately and clearly on TV. Someone like Rev Dr Peter Jensen or Pastor Phil Pringle would have been excellent choices for delivering such an important presentation.
Thank you for your good work but please make sure you have well presented Church leaders who can handle the strong vigor of Media challenges on “live to air”.
I agree with Rob Merrells – the entire Body of Christ needs to stand up and be united as we raise a voice of truth and righteousness into our nation. the church is not political as such, but that should not make us afraid to be that voice – our nation and its direction for the generations to come depends on whether or not we are prepared to make a stand. Every Christian needs to stand and not be ashamed of the gospel. We can speak truth in love.
