Jim Wallace is the Managing Director of the Australian Christian Lobby. He spoke to the ACL’s Katherine Spackman about the politics behind the asylum seeker issue, following another sinking boat off the coast off the Java at the weekend. Click here to listen.

We need a new government: one that is able to produce solutions and make them happen.
Hey Jonathan,
You obviously don’t like the current government. The Australian people voted, and like it or lump it, this is what we got.
Howard was swept our of office, partly by his mishandling of Asylum seekers. Abbott, and his dog whistler , shock jock mates would have returned to this policy ,in spite of it’s inhumanity. Notice Jim Wallace didn’t suggest a return to that policy.
The majority of Australians voted for the Coalition. I’m not advocating any policy in particular. The current government is unable to create any policy that works or that doesn’t have large amounts of waste. The current ideas that they are following are leading to a large number of deaths as profit-driven Indonesian entrepreneurs take advantage of a failing system. The current system is the least merciful policy yet. We need a new government: one that is able to produce solutions and make them happen.
The largest number of refugee who drowned on a single boat was over 400, when Howard was in office. The current Government has had over 200 bills passed this year. (you can google them)! You have been listening to too many shock jocks, Jonathan. It is the NOalition who haven’t provided any credible policy.
