The Australian Christian Lobby today joined calls for the Indonesian President Joko Widodo to grant clemency to convicted drug smugglers Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran.

ACL is writing to the Indonesian President urging him to heed international opinion against executing the pair.

Managing Director Lyle Shelton said while drug smuggling is an extremely serious crime which causes harm and often death to others, the pair should be shown mercy.

“The death sentence is not an appropriate punishment,” Mr Shelton said. “We share the Indonesian government’s focus on a zero tolerance policy towards drug smugglers.

“But zero tolerance does not have to mean execution. There are other strong punishments for serious crime that does not involve a firing squad.

“There is evidence of improved character in both Chan and Sukamaran." Mr Shelton said.
