The Australian Christian Lobby has joined calls for the Australian Government to demand the death penalty handed down to an Iranian pastor be rescinded immediately.
ACL Managing Director Jim Wallace said the Australian Government should also demand that Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani and his two colleagues, who are under similar threat of execution for practising their faith, be released without delay.
“Pastor Nadarkhani has been condemned by the Iranian regime for apostasy and renouncing Islam and could be executed any day.
“Until his arrest in 2009 he pastored a 400 strong church and a network of house churches.
“Every effort must be made to save this man’s life. Religious freedom is a fundamental human right and our government must do everything it can to pressure the Iranian regime meet its international human rights obligations,” Mr Wallace said.
“I note the US Congress last week unanimously passed a resolution condemning the Iranian government for sentencing this man to death,” he said.
