Queensland is considering a bill that would create a new regulatory framework under which Medicinal Cannabis products may be prescribed and dispensed to patients. Recreational use of the drug would remain illegal. A public consultation on the proposed bill is now underway with written submissions having closed on 11 July 2016.
There is some evidence that Cannabis and Cannabis derivatives may offer therapeutic benefits to patients for certain conditions. Trials are already underway in NSW to develop research into this area and Victoria passed a Medicinal Cannabis Bill in April this year. The Therapeutic Goods Administration is considering whether to revise its current scheduling, although no decision has been made yet.
This latest approach is to be distinguished from previous attempts to legalise the home cultivation of the plant.
