Jon Stanhope’s proposed amendments to the ACT Civil Unions Bill still confuse civil unions with marriage, according to Jim Wallace, Managing Director of the Australian Christian Lobby (ACL).

“Mr Stanhope’s proposal to create his own civil union celebrants still reeks of a civil marriage ceremony,” said Mr Wallace. “The union will begin with a marriage-like ceremony and will still be treated for all intents and purposes as if it is a marriage.”

ACL maintains its call for the removal of the Civil Union Bill and its replacement with a registration model similar to Tasmania’s. This would recognize same sex relationships and caring relationships but is clearly not equated with marriage.
