The Australian Christian Lobby today called on businesses to think more deeply about their support for redefining marriage.

ACL Managing Director Lyle Shelton said businesses campaigning for same-sex marriage risked marginalising staff and millions of customers who support the timeless definition of marriage.

"These businesses are free to do what they like with their money but have they thought through the consequences of redefining marriage?" Mr Shelton said.

"By entering this divisive political campaign these businesses risk alienating millions of staff and customers who for religious and cultural reasons will never accept same-sex marriage.

"Marriage is a bedrock institution of our society.

"Redefining marriage would redefine family. Have these CEOs asked themselves how two men or two women would be able to acquire a child?

"By definition, same-sex parenting involves removing a child from either their mum or their dad.

"Overseas, redefining marriage has also had serious consequences and people who hold a conscientious objection to same-sex marriage have been punished by law for living out their beliefs."

Mr Shelton said these businesses should think more carefully about the consequences of this divisive political campaign.
