Next year is shaping up to be an important time for marriage in Australia, with the Greens pressuring the Gillard Government to walk away from its election promise to uphold marriage as the union of a man and a woman.

A Greens’ motion, passed in the House of Representatives, calls on all Federal MPs to consult with you on gay marriage. Please take this opportunity to speak up for marriage with your local Member by following the advice in this video with Jim Wallace.

We realise that it is a busy time of the year, but we ask that you be activated to speak up for marriage now and before Parliament resumes in early February 2011. In brief, we’re asking that you:

  • Email your Member of Parliament to say marriage has too many benefits for children and society to be redefined;

  • Ring your MP's office to voice your concern; and,

  • Preferably, make an appointment to visit your MP.

To make the process of contacting your local Member and speaking up for marriage easier, ACL has created the ‘man+wife4life’ campaign at www.makeastand.org.au. There you will find all the information you need to make an informed contribution to the debate, including several articles of interest with strong pro-marriage arguments.

It is vital that Christians are activated now and before Parliament resumes in February to express their views with Federal Members in support of marriage. Action before Christmas is more likely to catch the local member in his or her office.

We can see marriage and its benefits retained and strengthened in Australian life, but it will require us speaking up at this crucial moment.

Members of Parliament have agreed to hear your perspective on the issue of marriage, and we ask that you take this opportunity to share your thoughts with your local representative.
