This week the new administration in the USA stopped taxpayers’ money from being used by organisations that promote and perform abortions in developing countries.

In one of his first actions in office, President Trump reinstated what is known as the “Mexico City Policy” which requires Non-Government Organisations receiving US aid to sign agreements that they would not perform or promote abortions.

This will add to the pressure on the Australian Government to follow the example set by the USA and stop taxpayer funding of overseas abortions.

Since being re-elected in the 2013 federal election, the Liberal Government has continued to fund international abortion providers such as Marie Stopes and Planned Parenthood who promote abortions in developing countries.

A long-standing practice not to fund abortions was overturned by former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd in 2009. Since then, funding of abortion firms such as Planned Parenthood has continued, despite video footage exposing that organisation for selling body parts from aborted babies.

The Australian Christian Lobby has warned the Federal Government that it was improper to continue funding an organisation that was acting in an unethical and, allegedly, illegal manner.

In 2013-14 the Federal Government provided $7 million to fund overseas abortions of which $3 million was provided to Marie Stopes and $4 million to Planned Parenthood.
