The Attorney General Christian Porter has released a draft prostitution bill for public comment.  If you would like to comment on the proposal please do so, however we are urging people to more importantly write to their local member.

The Liberal Government has given members a conscience vote which means they are not required to support the legislation.  With the Government unlikely to change their position on legalising brothels, members of parliament can potentially stop the progression of this bill.

If you read the Government’s press releases on this issue, it seems they are determined to get rid of brothels and prostitution in suburbs, however we are concerned about the legal brothels that will be allowed to operate in an apparently ‘safe’ and ‘healthy’ way outside of suburbs.

Research shows that many women in prostitution are raped, physically assaulted and threatened, and one study showed that 68 per cent of prostituted women suffered post traumatic stress disorder.  Comments by former Perth madam Linda Watson in an opinion piece in Wednesday's West Australian revealed the physical and psychological damage that regularly occurs in brothels- even in well managed ones.  No amount of regulation can make the exchange of money for sex several times a day ‘safe’ and ‘healthy’.  The very act of prostitution itself is inherently damaging.

Please be a voice for the voiceless, for the women that are exploited in prostitution and write to your MP today expressing your concerns.  It will only take a few minutes, but it is well worth the effort!  Also, alert your friends and church to this issue.  The more letters that are sent, the more chance we have of stopping legal brothels in WA.
