Permanent uncertainty ends as new pathway to permanency opens for TPV holders

The Australian Christian Lobby (ACL) has welcomed the Albanase government’s announcement that, from 14 February 2023, existing genuine refugees in Australia currently on Temporary Protection Visas (TPVs) and Safe Haven Enterprise Visas (SHEVs) will be provided a pathway to permanency.

ACL’s National Director of Politics, Wendy Francis, said, “This announcement will bring relief and joy to many vulnerable people who have sought refuge on our shores and who have proved their commitment to our nation’s wellbeing.

“Under TPV restrictions, Mothers and Fathers who fled war-torn nations for the sake of their children have found those same children, now young adults, locked out of university studies unless they can afford international student fees.

“Teenagers who have only ever called Australia home have lived with the uncertainly of life without the hope of citizenship in their own country.

“Compassion and control can exist hand in hand. Australians continue to expect our government to maintain a strong border policy. Australia must remain off limits to people smugglers who exploit vulnerable people and risk their lives on dangerous sea journeys.”

“Valentine’s Day 2023 brings with it fresh hope for many refugees who love Australia and will now be able to call Australia home.”
