The Australian Christian Lobby congratulates Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews and Australian of the Year, Rosie Batty, for their stellar leadership in eradicating domestic violence in Victoria.

Premier Andrews today hosted an historic joint sitting of the Victorian Parliament at which Rosie Batty addressed 128 Members of Parliament on the scourge of domestic violence.

In introducing Ms Batty, Premier Andrews spoke of the fears that exist for many women and children in Victorian homes where fear takes no holiday.

ACL’s Victorian Director Dan Flynn, said Daniel Andrews was right to point out that violence can increase at Christmas time when perpetrators may be more present in the home.

“We agree with the insight of the Opposition Leader, Matthew Guy that disrespect towards women is at the heart of family violence,” Mr Flynn said.

“Ms Batty brilliantly addressed the causes of domestic violence and the responsibility that men and the community must take to stamp it out. That two women a week die of domestic violence in Australia a week is evidence that we must all do more.

“The standing ovation given by MPs to Rosie Batty is symbolic of the high regard Victorians have for her courageous advocacy," Mr Flynn said.
