The Australian Christian Lobby (ACL) today backed calls to ban public funding of IVF services for lesbians and single women.

“The rights of children to at least have the opportunity of having a mother and a father should take precedence over the rights of adults in non-heterosexual relationships to have children,” ACL National Chief of Staff Lyle Shelton said.

“As a society we should not be publicly funding or encouraging the deliberate birth of children into relationship constructs that by default deny them a father or a mother,” Mr Shelton said.

Legislative moves to amend the Federal Sex Discrimination Act to allow States to limit access by lesbians and single women to IVF lapsed in the Federal Parliament in 2004.

Liberal Senator Guy Barnett has said he will urge the Government to re-introduce the legislation so that the ban can be activated.

“Both sides of politics have been strong in their support of marriage being between a man and a woman.

“It flows from this that parenting should also be in this context, wherever possible,” Mr Shelton said.
