An inquiry into the Adoption Act 1988 and Adoption Regulations 2004 is underway. ACL has provided a submission to the committee, arguing that eligibility for those seeking adoption should not be extended to alternate family structures beyond heterosexual couples.
The evidence from social science research is that children do best when raised by their biological mother and father in a stable relationship. Whilst many children miss out on this ideal, public policy should ensure that the law does not prevent a child from missing out on a mother or father by design.
