The Australian Christian Lobby today welcomed the WA Department of Culture and Arts’ decision to turn off a controversial sprinkler system
designed to deter homeless people from sleeping near the centre.
ACL WA State Director Dahlia Messiha said the sprinkler system was a ‘heartless approach’ and should never have been installed in the first place.
“Pouring water on those facing lack of employment, mental health issues, family conflict and worse is outrageous. These people deserve our help, not to be treated as second-class citizens.
“These are human beings and they ought to be treated with dignity and respect.
“Trying to hide the problem of homelessness in Perth is not a solution.
“ACL welcomes the belated decision to turn off this sprinkler system though we are astonished it was ever allowed to be installed in the first place.”
