The Australian Christian Lobby today welcomed reports that Foreign Minister Julie Bishop confirmed to the Coalition Party Room that there would be no new cuts to Australia’s overseas aid program in tonight’s federal budget.
Last year the government announced a $5 billion cap to Australia’s aid program and in recent weeks, speculation had built that the world’s poorest were in for more cuts.
ACL Managing Director Lyle Shelton said that, if confirmed, the government had made the right decision.
“If these reports that aid will be quarantined prove correct, then the government appears to have made the right decision not to further cut the aid budget.
“ACL looks forward to these reports being confirmed tonight in Treasurer Joe Hockey’s budget speech.
“Australia though still has a long way to go to meet our 0.7% Millennium Development Goals promise.
“We look forward to Australia’s aid increase in future budgets.”
Mr Shelton thanked ACL supporters who emailed Joe Hockey last week calling on the government to rule out further cuts to Australia’s aid program.
