The Federal Government has denied an Indian refugee family permanent residency because their 10-year-old son, Aaryan, has Down syndrome.

The family has lived in Australia for seven years and both parents are employed in critically understaffed industries. Aaryan attends a regular school and has no need for medication or medical treatment.

Yet the government has deemed Aaryan to be a burden on the health system, and his family is due to be deported to India in two weeks. You can watch the ABC report here.

This deportation sends a heartbreaking message to people with disabilities – and to pregnant women who are carrying a child with a disability – that some lives are more valuable than others. This cannot be tolerated.
