On 22 October 2025, Mr John Ruddick MLC introduced the Abortion Law Reform (Sex Selection Prohibition) Amendment Bill 2025 in of NSW Parliament. This Bill aims to ban abortions performed for the purpose of sex selection, a practice that disproportionately targets unborn girls simply because of their female.
This is an important step toward protecting the most vulnerable among us. Our girls, and our children.

A Disturbing Reality
In May 2025, the journal Global Public Health published a landmark study confirming that sex-selective abortions are occurring in New South Wales. This has a significant impact on the lives of baby girls.
The data showed a strong link between these terminations and the use of ultrasounds and non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) which reveals a baby’s sex early in the pregnancy.
Sex-selective abortion is violence towards women in its most extreme form. It is the killing of girls simply because they are girls. If we truly believe in equality and justice, we cannot be silent on this issue.
A Call to Courage and Compassion
Every life whether it is a boy or girl, wanted or unwanted bears the image of God and has great value (Gen 1:27). Every step we can take to stop the destruction of innocent lives is a step worth taking.
We pray that this Bill will help open the eyes of our Members of Parliament, our Government, and our nation to a profound truth: Those within the womb are living human beings, deserving of love, protection, and life itself.
This moment is not only about legislation, but also about awakening hearts to truth.
Speaking Truth with Love
At the Australian Christian Lobby (ACL), we regularly meet mothers who were never told the full truth about abortion. What it is, what it does, and who it affects.
Our culture repeats slogans that sound empowering but hide the reality. Let’s look at the simple truths around abortion versus the lies mothers are told:
“My body, my choice.”
Fact: From the moment of fertilisation, a baby has its own unique DNA, completely distinct from both mother and father. It is a separate, living human being — not merely part of the mother’s body.
“It’s not a human.”
Fact: Experts in embryology agree that the unborn child is human from the moment of conception. The same living organism grows and develops continuously from fertilisation until birth.
“It’s not alive.”
Fact: From fertilisation, an embryo meets all the scientific criteria for life. It grows, responds to stimuli, uses energy, maintains homeostasis, and is composed of living cells. There has never been serious debate about whether the unborn are alive, only whether they are legal persons.
“It’s the best decision for the mothers.”
Fact: A major meta-analysis published in the British Journal of Psychiatry (over 877,000 women) found that women who had abortions were 81% more likely to experience mental health problems. Abortion doesn’t heal, it deepens the wound. A separate study indicated all rates of all forms of disorder were higher in women who have abortions, including anxiety disorders and substance misuse.
“It’s best for her mental health.”
Fact: Women who have abortions are 154% more likely to commit suicide.
A Finnish study found that suicide rates after abortion were 3.5 times higher than the general female population and six times higher than among women who gave birth. Australian women deserve real care, real help, and real hope – not the false promise of relief that abortion supposedly offers but doesn’t.
“They don’t feel pain”
Fact: Unborn babies do feel pain. Multiple scientific studies indicate that unborn babies have visibly shown signs of pain from as early as 12 weeks’ gestation.
The Word of God
The Bible speaks with tenderness and power about life in the womb:
- Jeremiah 1:5 – “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; before you were born I set you apart.”
- Psalm 139:13–16 – “You created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb… your eyes saw my unformed body.”
And in Luke 1:41–44, we see a vivid picture of life before birth:
“When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit… As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy.”
Here, an unborn child, John the Baptist, recognises the presence of another unborn child, Jesus Christ. Both women are called mothers, even before their babies are born. The Bible also tells us that Jesus is fully man (John 1:14; Philippians 2:6–8; 1 Timothy 2:5; Hebrews 2:17). That means the Son of God became human from conception, when He was formed in Mary’s womb. Life is sacred from conception — even our Saviour entered the world this way.
A Final Word
As Christians, we are called not only to defend life, but to do so with compassion and conviction. We grieve for every life lost, and we would love to reach out to every mother who has been wounded by abortion with the grace and healing of Christ.
Our prayer is that this Bill, and the movement behind it, will help our nation rediscover the truth that life, in every form and at every stage, is a sacred gift from God.
Please pray for the New South Wales government and for the members who will read each letter. Pray that God reveals to them the true sancitity of human life. Pray for the protection of our unborn babies. Please also pray for the mother’s who have undertaken this procedure, pray for God to reveal the truth to them through His grace, love and mercy.
