Independent MLC Sarah Game will soon introduce an amendment in the South Australian Parliament limiting late term abortion; a reform the ACL strongly supports.

South Australia currently allows abortion up to birth for any reason- even healthy babies can be aborted after 23 weeks through feticide. These procedures are traumatic for both mother and child. This new bill would limit abortions after 23 weeks to cases where it is required to save the life of the mother or where there are severe foetal abnormalities detected. The proposed changes aim to protect viable, late-term unborn children and offer a more compassionate approach to both mother and child.

While the ACL does not support abortion at any stage of pregnancy, nor does it support abortion for foetal abnormalities, it believes this Bill is a sensible step in the right direction.

Since 2022, the lives of 79 healthy babies in the third trimester have been lost to abortion in our State. Reform is urgently needed to protect these precious lives. Rolling back late-term abortion is one vital step toward a society where every unborn life is valued, and where vulnerable mothers are supported through holistic care – offering practical parental support, compassionate counselling, and stronger adoption pathways.

The ACL urges all Members of Parliament to support this important reform to save healthy babies’ lives. Write to your MP today in support of this legislation using our email tool.

Independent MP Hon Sarah Game MLC has announced her plans to introduce a pro-life amendment Bill, ‘Termination of Pregnancy (Restrictions on Terminations after 22 Weeks and 6 Days) Amendment Bill 2025’ before the March 2026 state election. This Bill follows last year’s defeat of a similar proposal introduced by Liberal MLC Ben Hood, the Termination of Pregnancy (Terminations and Live Births) Amendment Bill 2024 (Bill), which sadly lost by 1 vote.

By writing to your MP in support of this legislation, you are helping build momentum for life. The make-up of the Upper House, who will vote on this legislation, remains the same as when the Hon. Ben Hood MLC’s Live Births Bill was introduced. Therefore, we must approach this campaign with prayerful determination, recognising that the victory we seek may require commitment to a long-term strategy. A part of this strategy is continued communications to our Members of Parliament. So, thank you for your advocacy.
