The Australian Christian Lobby (ACL) is supporting a call for the Coalition to match Labor’s commitment to increase foreign aid funding to 0.5 percent of gross national income by 2015.

ACL Managing Director Jim Wallace today said that research released by the ACL on Monday shows that aid for developing countries is one of the top five issues of concern to Christians.

“Both major parties have acknowledged the Millennium Development Goals and have committed to increasing aid, but expressing our aid target as a percentage of GNI is a more practical and disciplined way to proceed, even though it is still not yet at the 0.7 percent target for OECD countries,” Mr Wallace said.

“As a nation we need to do far more on this crucial issue. We are a prosperous country and have a moral responsibility to provide greater aid to the world’s poorest.”
