Australia’s Judeo-Christian heritage has played a key role in the development of Australian society and government, and it is only right that this be acknowledged in the proposed new citizenship test, according to the Australian Christian Lobby (ACL).

ACL Managing Director Jim Wallace said that Judeo-Christian values have helped to shape the nation of Australia and it is important that this formative influence is acknowledged by people wishing to become citizens.

“The failure to acknowledge our Judeo-Christian heritage is a real source of tension in Australia today as people instead take it upon themselves to reinvent the basis of our value system to suit their own agenda,” Mr Wallace said.

“Critics are becoming far too ‘politically correct’ if they don’t even want some basic facts of Australia’s heritage acknowledged.

“If we are to expect immigrants to subscribe to Australian values it would seem obvious that they should know where they come from, on what worldview they are based.”

Mr Wallace said that Australia’s Judeo-Christian heritage has been integral to the nature and development of the nation’s very successful system of government and society and that this certainly isn’t something to be ashamed of.

“It is entirely appropriate that a citizenship test require people to acknowledge the source of our Australian values, and the Minister is to be congratulated on having the strength to include it.”
