The Law Reform Commission (LRC) recently released a Discussion Paper to progress the review of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984 ordered by the Attorney General last year.

The direction of the document is of grave concern to all faith communities. It’s tone and the 120 questions it canvasses indicates their desire to remove – or at least scale back – exemptions for religious institutions such as churches, Christian schools and charities.

It also seeks to widen the scope of the Act by including gender identity and physical features as “protected attributes.”

It is deeply disturbing that the LRC would advocate limiting religious freedoms that are enshrined in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. It is essential that Christian organisations are allowed to exclusively employ staff that share their Christian values.

Please prepare a submission to the LRC. There is a need for many individual Christians – and religious organisations like churches, schools, and charities – to make submissions by Friday 29 October 2021.

How to make your submission

Writing a submission takes a little more time than participating in an email campaign. But this is very important, so please persevere!

Download the template: Click here and then save the file to your own computer.

Choose your topic: The LRC invites feedback on over 120 questions but we suggest you limit your response to addressing one of three key areas:

  1. Protecting freedoms of religious schools, charities and churches

  2. Gender identity OR

  3. Vilification

Work on your text: Make the template your own by re-stating things in your own words where possible. Delete any parts you don’t need. Add in your personal stories where indicated. The last paragraph provides an opportunity for you to comment on why religious freedom and expression is important to you.

Send your submission: Once you have completed your submission, email it to [email protected] by Friday, 29 October 2021. Alternatively, you can mail it to Law Reform Commission, GPO Box F317, PERTH WA 6841.

Thank you for taking action to help protect religious freedom, and the Christian schools, charities and churches in WA.
