Federal government combats modern slavery

Federal government’s introduction of legislation aimed at stopping modern slavery in all its forms has been welcomed by Australian Christian Lobby.

One of the key modern slavery problems in Australia is sex trafficking. As reported in the United States’ 2017 Trafficking in Persons Report, Australia is primarily a destination country for women and girls subjected to sex trafficking.

This bill shows Australia is prepared to lead the way on the international stage in combating the insidious trade of human lives for profit.

ACL managing director Martyn Iles said, “It shows great character for the government to acknowledge that modern slavery can occur even in our own backyard.”

“This bill provides a foundation for Australia to have an honest conversation about the relationship between human trafficking and sexual exploitation.”

“The exploitation of women in particular through sex trafficking is one of the most horrendous problems in Australia.”

“ACL believes that every human is born with inherent dignity, free from any form of slavery. This bill provides safeguards to ensure Australia continues to promote freedom for everyone.” said Martyn Iles.

The Centre for Human Dignity has been established as an initiative of ACL to help end sexual exploitation. It’s time to stand together to stop those exploiting sexuality, stealing people’s dignity and self-worth.
