A Tasmanian Labor government will make taxpayers fund harmful gender re-assignment surgery warns the Australian Christian Lobby.
The proposal to lobby Shadow Health Minister Catherine King to take this policy idea to Labor’s National conference was passed by Labor delegates at the weekend.
“It’s being touted as a policy initiative to allow transgender Tasmanians free access to ‘life-changing’ procedures, a claim that has no scientific basis,” said Mark Brown, ACL’s state director.
“The Obama administration did not support such taxpayer funded interventions due to a lack of evidence of patient benefit. On the contrary, they acknowledged evidence indicating serious harm citing a well-known Swedish study which showed a 20 times higher mortality (primarily due to suicide) 10-15 years post-surgery.”
“Tax-payers should not be paying for such contested experimental therapies,” commented Mr Brown.
The Australian Christian Lobby believe that those with gender dysphoria must be treated with respect and have access to professional evidence-based psychological help.
