Angela Merkel’s about-face on children’s welfare is disturbing because the same-sex marriage lobby will be back for commercial surrogacy and anonymous sperm donation, according to the Australian Christian Lobby.
ACL Managing Director Lyle Shelton made the comments as news broke this afternoon that Germany had rushed through a bill to redefine marriage with Chancellor Angela Merkel breaking her election promise.
“Australians expect the Turnbull Government to keep its election promise to allow them to have a say on the consequences of redefining marriage in law,” Mr Shelton said.
The reason Ms Merkel gave for her backflip was that she now thought it was okay for same-sex couples to adopt children.
“Why the thousands of infertile married heterosexual couples should be by-passed to allow two men or two women access to the limited number of children available for adoption is a mystery,” Mr Shelton said.
“No one denies that same-sex couples can show love to a child but they can’t provide the gender diversity of a mother and a father, something orphaned children should not be denied by the state.
“But of course, the limited number of children available for adoption by both heterosexual and same-sex couples means children will have to be acquired through unethical assisted reproductive technology practices in order for the demands of ‘marriage equality’ to be met,” Mr Shelton said.
“Australian same-sex marriage advocates are already calling for an exploration of the lifting of Australia’s ban on commercial surrogacy (see page 30).
“The inability of politicians to think through the consequences of redefining marriage is disturbing.
“The Turnbull Government is right to stick to its promise to allow all Australians to vote on the consequences of redefining marriage.”
