On Wednesday Chief of Staff John Austin and I flew to Brisbane to greet our international guest, New York Times Best Selling author Eric Metaxas.
Joined by ACL’s Queensland Director Wendy Francis, we dined that night and talked through the week ahead.
It has been an absolute privilege and delight meeting and getting to know Eric.
He has been a hero to me ever since I read his biography of anti-slavery campaigner William Wilberforce. Later, his biography of the German pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who defied no less than Hitler, impacted my life like few books have.
It has been a dream come true to be hosting him in Australia this week.
Eight hundred people turned out on Thursday to hear Eric in Brisbane and left greatly encouraged and inspired.
Eric stayed in Queensland for the Christian Media Australia conference at the Gold Coast while we headed to Sydney for the ACL conference dinner with Daily Telegraph and Herald Sun columnist Miranda Devine.
Our conference at Sydney’s Wesley Centre was attended by 600 with the much hyped protest a fizzer.
We were treated to the best line-up of speakers ever assembled for an ACL conference.
Some of the best though were our home-grown talent such as Wendy Francis and Martyn Iles.
Wendy’s talk on the sexualisation of children through the so-called Safe Schools and Building Better Relationships programs was powerful. If we can’t get outraged at what our politicians are doing, probably unwittingly, to children then we are in trouble.
We will have it and the other talks available on our website as soon as possible.
Finally, last night I was asked to be on the ABC1’s Q&A a program for the second time in two months.
This was a privilege to be invited back but for a special on Christianity, it was surreal to be on a panel where only two of us supported a Christian view of marriage.
I was able to address some of the false media reporting of Eric.
Thanks for all who prayed for us this week and for my appearance on Q&A.
God’s hand has certainly been with us and it has been wonderful to see people so excited and inspired by Eric’s visit and the other conference speakers.
We are flying to Melbourne tonight for a leaders’ lunch tomorrow and final public event tomorrow night.
Please keep praying.
