ACL Welcomes Social Media Ban To Protect Children

The Australian Christian Lobby welcomes the passage of the Federal Government’s social media ban for children under the age of 16 through the Senate today.

ACL CEO Michelle Pearse said “This is a significant step forward in safeguarding children online.”

“This move addresses well-documented concerns about the vulnerability of children on these platforms, including exposure to predators, pornographic and other harmful content, and the heightened risk of mental health issues linked to social media use.”

“Reducing children’s exposure to harmful content has always been a priority for the ACL, particularly in our advocacy for the implementation of age assurance technologies on pornographic websites”, Pearse said. “The ACL remains committed to ensuring robust age restrictions across these platforms.”

The ACL commends the Government for passing this legislation to create a safer digital environment for children and for holding social media platforms more accountable for the harm they can propagate.
