Basketball Victoria falls behind in advocating for female athletes

Just days after Basketball Victoria revealed that biological males will be allowed to participate in elite female competitions, World Athletics has banned transgender athletes from competing in female track and field events, citing fairness over inclusion.

Christopher Brohier, Political Director for the Australian Christian Lobby said:

“The decisions by World Athletics and World Aquatics (FINA) to ban biological males from female competitions are entirely justified. Australian sports must follow suit.

“Females in almost every sport face a disadvantage when competing against biological males. But they dare not protest, fearing vilification from activists. Sporting bodies should fight to protect the best interests of their athletes, but groups like Basketball Victoria have failed their women and girls.

“World Athletics has shown the way by choosing to, ‘prioritise fairness and integrity of the female competition before inclusion.’ When will Australian sporting bodies do the same?”

ACL calls on Basketball Victoria and all Australian sporting leagues to ban biological males who have gone through puberty from competing in female leagues – to ensure fairness and safety for women and girls.
