Christmas hope for Perth Nativity miracle

The Lord Mayor has put a motion on the agenda of the City of Perth council meeting on tonight (24 November) to reinstate the Nativity event cancelled by City Commissioners.

The WA Director of the Australian Christian Lobby, Peter Abetz, said Mayor Zempilas is to be commended for honouring his election commitment to attempt to reinstate this iconic community goodwill event.

“The Nativity event has always drawn a large multi-ethnic and multi-faith crowds each year,” Mr Abetz noted. “The City’s own research showed that the Nativity event had the highest social value of various events they hosted – rating higher than the Skyshow and the New Years Eve celebration.”

“The Commissioners cancelled the Nativity event on the grounds that it was not ‘all inclusive’. This led to a massive public backlash, with the commissioners receiving over 1,200 emails urging them to reverse their decision. An online petition generated over 7,000 signatures.

“Hosting the Nativity event will draw many people from the suburbs into the CBD and bring extra trade for struggling businesses.

“The ACL is informed that producers of the Nativity event – previously with a cast of 100 people and live animals – can make the event happen if the Council gives them the go-ahead.

“In the spirit of Christmas charity and goodwill, ACL calls on councillors to support the Mayor’s motion.”
