The Australian Christian Lobby (ACL) has expressed deep concern after Premier Jeremy Rockliff ruled out changes to Tasmania’s anti-discrimination laws following Tickle v Giggle decision.
During Question Time, Independent MP Kristie Johnston asked whether the Government would amend the Anti-Discrimination Act to explicitly recognise ‘male’ and ‘female’.
Premier Rockliff responded that the Government had “no plans to change the anti-discrimination laws.”
ACL Tasmania Director Rafael Demarchi said the response ignored growing community concern following the recent Tickle v Giggle ruling.
The Federal Court decision has intensified concerns about the erosion of female-only spaces, protections, and sex-based rights.
“The decision in the Tickle v Giggle case has sent shockwaves through the nation,” Mr Demarchi said.
“Women and girls deserve laws that clearly recognise biological sex and protect female-only spaces in Tasmania and across the nation.”
The Australian Christian Lobby is also supporting Women Speak Tasmania’s petition calling for biological sex to be recognised in Tasmania’s anti-discrimination laws.
The petition reflects widespread concern among Tasmanians who want stronger protections for women and girls.
“Tasmania’s refusal to review the legislation places us increasingly out of step with growing calls across Australia for clearer protections based on biological sex.”
One Nation Senator Pauline Hanson, Nationals Senator Matt Canavan, and Liberal Opposition Leader Angus Taylor, have publicly committed to reviewing or changing sex discrimination laws following the Federal Court’s Tickle v Giggle decision.
“Tasmania should not be lagging behind while other leaders acknowledge the urgent need for legal clarity.”
The Australian Christian Lobby is calling on the Rockliff Government to review Tasmania’s anti-discrimination laws and ensure women’s spaces, services and sport remain protected based on biological sex.
