A colourful yet solemn display of thousands of baby booties, sent in from across Australia, will be held this Wednesday 27 August on the front lawns of Parliament House. The display was first held in 2023 to support the Human Rights (Children Born Alive Protection) Bill 2022, which sought to ensure babies born alive following an abortion are given appropriate medical care. In 2022, 50 babies were born alive and left to die in Queensland alone, a sobering fact most Australians would be appalled by if they knew.
The baby booties display is now held annually to raise awareness about the 89,000 babies who lose their lives to abortion every year. That equates to one baby every six minutes.
Michelle Pearse, CEO of the Australian Christian Lobby, states “Abortion causes so much unseen distress and sorrow. As a civilised society, its time our political leaders stopped these inhumane practices and instead focused on providing genuine care for vulnerable pregnant women and their precious unborn babies.”
The display of several thousand baby booties will be spread out on the front lawn of Parliament House to represent the lives lost through abortion. Members of Parliament will join to speak to the issue and people will gather, standing to show their deep concern about this unnecessary loss of life.
