Coalition vows to keep male offenders out of women’s prisons

The Australian Christian Lobby welcomes the Opposition Leader Brad Battin’s pledge to ban transgender male sex offenders and paedophiles from women’s prisons. ACL says the commitment is an important first step to restoring safety for women.

The Victorian Birth Certificate Law, introduced in 2020, allows individuals to change the gender on their birth certificate without any gender transition surgery.

Since then, more than 2,700 people have changed their gender status. Almost half of them changed from male to female, which means more than a thousand biological males now access women-only facilities every day.

ACL Victorian Director Jasmine Yuen said, “Our women and girls deserve better. They should feel safe in bathrooms, changing rooms, and on sporting fields. It is unthinkable that females should fear for their safety or have to defend themselves from predators in what should be secure, private spaces.”

ACL commends the Opposition Leaders’ announcement but calls on the Coalition to go further.

Yuen said, “If elected next year, the Coalition must repeal the flawed Birth Certificate Law. Only then will we restore fairness and safety for women and girls in our State.”
