The Australian Christian Lobby (ACL) today released a Parents’ Joint Letter signed by 1,850 Victorian parents, calling on the Labor Government to review the Respectful Relationships and Sexuality Education programs, as well as the Mature Minor Policy.
The Australian last week reported that the Respectful Relationships program included content on gender diversity being delivered to Victorian children as young as five years old in Prep.
ACL Victorian Director, Jasmine Yuen, said the scale of parent concern demands urgent government attention.
“Parents are deeply worried about the age-appropriateness and ideological nature of these programs. They want their voices heard and their role respected in decisions about their children’s education,” Yuen said.
The Parents’ Joint Letter urges the Government to:
- Review the Respectful Relationships and Sexuality Education programs, and the Mature Minor Policy.
- Ensure parents are consulted on curriculum content relating to children’s wellbeing, relationships, and sexuality.
- Provide an opportunity for genuine dialogue between parents and the Government.
Yuen said recent media fallout around curriculum changes – especially parents’ deep concerns – underscores just how urgent respectful engagement with families has become.
“Public clashes can be avoided if the Government is willing to engage constructively with parents. We are currently looking into hosting a Parent Forum to facilitate respectful dialogue between Victorian parents and the Government, including the Opposition, for the future and wellbeing of all Victorian families and children.” Yuen said.
“We acknowledge that the Labor Government has shown a willingness to listen to community concerns in other areas. We urge the same openness here, to ensure Victorian children receive an age-appropriate and culturally sensitive education that supports both their learning and wellbeing.”
