The Australian Christian Lobby has called on the Coalition to clarify comments made last night that it may “not oppose” the Government’s plan to break its election promise and cut overseas aid.
ACL Managing Director Jim Wallace said the Coalition also promised at the 2010 election to support increases to aid to 0.5 per cent of Gross National Income.
“The Coalition has an opportunity to keep faith with its election promise by opposing any move to cut aid to the world’s poor,” Mr Wallace said.
“While we understand that budgets must be balanced, doing so by breaking commitments to the poor and promises to Australian voters is not the way to achieve this.
“It is all too easy to make promises to help the world’s poor and then put them on the ‘never never’ by continually deferring the commitment.”
Mr Wallace said Australia was falling well short of its Millennium Development Goal promise made along with other rich nations to boost aid to 0.7 per cent of GNI by 2015.
