The Australian Christian Lobby today called on members of the Legislative Council in New South Wales to reject a Greens’ motion on same-sex marriage.

ACL’s NSW Director David Hutt said changing the definition of marriage would damage the institutions of marriage and family and criticized the Premier and Opposition Leader’s decision to allow a conscience vote on the motion.

"Changing marriage means changing parenting. That would mean a child could be deliberately denied his or her mother or father to satisfy the desires of homosexual adults. Such a radical change is not a matter of conscience, it is a matter of the rights of the child, something a government is bound to protect,” Mr Hutt said.

Mr Hutt said recent calls by polyamorous activists to broaden the definition of marriage to include multiple partners highlighted the dangers of redefining marriage.

“If we change the definition of marriage to include people of the same gender, where does it stop? Politicians need to recognize the central importance of marriage and stop participating in its deconstruction.

“The Greens’ motion is not only an indulgence on the state parliament’s time, it is the start of a dangerous slippery slope,” he said.
