The Australian Christian Lobby (ACL) today welcomed the defeat of the NSW Greens’ euthanasia bill in the New South Wales Legislative Council. The bill was defeated 13 votes to 23.
ACL NSW Director David Hutt said legalising euthanasia would put society’s most vulnerable people at risk.
“ACL congratulates those members who voted against this bill,” Mr Hutt said.
“This was a convincing vote. Many members gave passionate and persuasive arguments against legalising euthanasia.
“Legalising euthanasia would have sent a message to vulnerable sick and elderly people that terminating your own life is an acceptable option,” Mr Hutt said.
“Euthanasia also sends the message to the vulnerable that terminating your own life is a better option than becoming a ‘burden’ on family and friend.
“Doctors, as healthcare providers, are expected to protect and promote life, not end life or encourage the ending of life.”
Mr Hutt said there was no need for the issue to be raised in the Legislative Assembly as the bill had little prospects of being made law.
