The Australian Christian Lobby said the position by ethicists justifying the killing of babies should provide a wakeup call on where relativist ethics leads and cause us to immediately review our position on abortion.

The “After-birth abortion: why should the baby live?” article in the Medical Journal of Ethics last week by Alberto Giubilini of Monash University and Dr Francesca Minerva of Melbourne University stated that:

“If criteria such as the costs (social, psychological, economic) for the potential parents are good enough reasons for having an abortion even when the fetus is healthy, if the moral status of the newborn is the same as that of the infant and if neither has any moral value by virtue of being a potential person, then the same reasons which justify abortion should also justify the killing of the potential person when it is at the stage of a newborn. “

“You can hardly fault this logic,” said Mr Wallace, “but it strips bare the ethics of abortion and more than that, the ethical free fall we are in because we allow aggressive minority lobbies to cause us to sacrifice what have always been immutable principles such as the sanctity of life.”

“I am more than proud that it has been the church throughout history that has tried to hold society to truth on this and other issues of morality”, said Mr Wallace “ and call on our governments to acknowledge the moral abyss into which compromise of fundamental truths leads us, so well illustrated by this instance.”
