Written submissions giving a reasoned argument supporting the Marriage Act have outnumbered submissions calling for a redefinition of marriage by 11 to one.

The Australian Christian Lobby today said it was heartened by this response from the 6500 thoughtful people who had taken the time to write a considered submission in support of the Marriage Act remaining true to its biological definition.

Only 600 people wrote an original submission arguing for a redefinition of marriage. Of the total of 75,000 submissions received, 67,000 were form letters.

ACL managing director Jim Wallace said he believed the Committee should give much more weight to the considered opinion of people who had taken the time and effort to write.

“The purpose of an inquiry is to elicit and weigh opinions, not to provide another option for a public poll, the stuff of newspaper websites,” Mr Wallace said.
