The Australian Christian Lobby encourages hope and purpose, even in the final chapter of people’s lives so that despondent South Australians would not choose to prematurely end their own lives.
“We grieve that learn this week that 10 terminally ill South Australians took their own lives in the first 6 months of last year,” ACL SA director Christopher Brohier said, “ “This sad statistic is no supporting argument for euthanasia. Rather, we should ask why these events happened and how we could have cared for our fellow South Australians better.”
“We also learned this week that a disturbing number of 52 Victorians ended their own lives in the last 6 months of last year via assisted suicide. Legalising euthanasia does not alleviate, but compounds, the problem of people feeling that their lives are not worth living.”
Victorian Labor MP Marlene Kairouz said the Victorian figures are alarming, while Victorian Liberal opposition leader Michael O’Brien expressed concern about the administrative errors in the administration of the scheme.
“Do we South Australians want more suicides or less?” Mr Brohier queried, “When you consider the tragedy of suicide and the many efforts being made to prevent it, the answer must be less. We reject calls to legalise assisted suicide in SA.”
