The Australian Christian Lobby today called on the Tasmanian Labor Party to pull back from its stated intent to support Mike Gaffney MLC’s ‘Assisted Dying’ Bill.
“This Bill is based on hopelessness and fear. The Labor Party should champion hope and purpose for vulnerable Tasmanians by increasing palliative care,” ACL Tasmanian director Christopher Brohier said. ”They should not support this poorly drafted Bill which feeds on peoples’ fears.”
”Recent calls in Victoria to ease assisted suicide legislation after just one year of operation shows that so-called ‘safeguards’ can easily be dumped soon after becoming law.
“If Mike Gaffney’s assisted suicide legislation passes, Tasmanians can be assured on one thing: very soon after it comes into operation, the so-called protective requirements will be relaxed.
“Tasmanian members of parliament should look at the incremental campaign tactics of groups like Voluntary Assisted Life Ending (VALE) and be under no illusion – the same tactics will be applied here.
The ACL called on Tasmanian MPs to reject the Bill.
