The Australian Christian Lobby has consistently expressed concern over the surge in the number of children rushed into irreversible, life-changing gender reassignment medication or surgeries. A recent report found there were 336 new referrals to the Royal Children’s Hospital gender clinic in 2019, representing a staggering 1,767% increase since 2012.
From 1 May, Victorians can now change their gender on their birth certificate “without having to undergo invasive and costly sex affirmation surgery”, according to the State Government. Victorians can nominate any sex descriptor they wish (so long as it’s not obscene or offensive) as often as every 12 months. Children under 18 can also change gender through an application submitted by their parents.
Meanwhile, the Victorian government intends to prosecute anyone for ‘Conversion Therapy’, a concept it deems to include anything other than affirming a child’s nominated gender identity.
“This astonishing surge in life-changing treatments by minors should be scrutinised carefully. Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt must support a government inquiry into the surge in gender-confused children and the way they are being treated. Calling for a nationally consistent approach on Friday is far too little, too late.”
