Victorian Liberal Party must Stand for Liberal Values

The Australian Christian Lobby has today criticised the Victorian Liberal Party for running scared on basic liberal values. It comes as the party mulls avoiding a vote on the Andrews’ government’s ‘change and suppression’ bill which undermines free speech and parents’ rights in unprecedented ways.

“This is a bill that would make a parent into a criminal and a domestic abuser, at risk of 10 years in prison, purely because they don’t want their young gender questioning child to undergo irreversible hormone replacement therapy,” said ACL managing director, Martyn Iles.

“This is a bill that specifically names prayer as a criminal offence, also punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

“To state the obvious, the Andrews government and the Equal Opportunity Commission have no business whatsoever deciding what people can pray for, or how they pray. They have no business whatsoever getting minors onto irreversible hormone replacement therapy and puberty blockers without parental consent. This is tyranny.

“If the Liberals are too scared of their own freedoms-based values to stand against the grossest attack against them in Australia’s history, then one must ask what has become of the party of Sir Robert Menzies,” said Mr Iles.

“With the passage of this bill, a line will be crossed. It’s clearly stated tyrannical content defies belief.”

The Australian Christian Lobby joins church leaders and civil liberty advocates in urging the Liberal Party and crossbench to reject the ‘change and suppression’ bill.
