A crowd of 750 people last night attended the Perth premiere screening of ‘Nefarious: Merchant of Souls’, directed by American abolitionist Benjamin Nolot. This hard-hitting documentary exposes the realities of the sex trade including human trafficking, and the exploitation and abuse that all women suffer in prostitution.
Ten politicians from Perth were able to view this documentary at a screening at Parliament House and the screening last night. ACL hopes this will influence the outcome of the vote on a draft prostitution bill, which is likely to take place before the end of the year.
The documentary showed that legalisation of prostitution only legitimises the exploitation of women and pointed to Sweden as a beacon of hope in showing other countries how to reduce the amount of prostitution and human trafficking.
Nolot hopes to bring the documentary again to Australia in November as it would be a great opportunity for more politicians across the country to be confronted with the realities of prostitution and human trafficking and to take another look at our failed system across Australia.
