The Australian Christian Lobby has today praised the Launceston City Council for voting down the motion supporting council endorsement of “same-sex marriage”.

Mark Brown, ACL’s Tasmanian State Director said: “A number of alderman agreed that the issue was outside the jurisdiction of local government”.

This follows a 2013 High-Court ruling that Federal parliament alone has the power to change marriage laws.

“Marriage is an important building block in any functional society, especially when kids are involved. Children need their mum and their dad, and we shouldn’t be deliberately depriving them of that.”

There was also wide-spread concern about the lack of consultation regarding the issue.

“This motion was introduced to the meeting agenda without a word of consultation only one week out from a vote”.

A number of aldermen admitted to being lobbied heavily on the issue from ratepayers with the majority asking alderman to reject the motion.

“Although further consultation of constituents is being considered, the issue should be shelved and left to the federal parliament to debate” said Mr Brown.
