MR: Dangerous effects of RU486 being ignored by Parliament as those advocating for right to life labelled ‘anti-women’
· October 10, 2012 11:00 AM
For release: Wednesday 10 October 2012
The Australian Christian Lobby has renewed its call for the evidence about the harms to women of the chemical abortion drug RU486 to be considered in light of a speech being made by Health Minister Tanya Plibersek today promoting the drug.
ACL spokeswoman Wendy Francis has expressed concern that both political parties are ignoring the evidence about the safety of RU486.
“It is imperative that our government take into consideration the hundreds of women who have suffered major health issues after taking this drug,” Ms Francis said.
In response to a question by Senator Boswell, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA)
told the Senate
earlier this year that since the drug was approved under the Authorised Provider Scheme in April 2006, there had been 832 reports of “adverse events” to women prescribed the drug.
“Of the 832 women, 599 required surgery to remove the poisoned embryo after the failure of the drug to induce a miscarriage.
“In 2010, a Melbourne woman tragically died after taking RU486. We need to ensure there is a coronial investigation into this tragedy before any licences are granted.
“Women facing unsupported pregnancies should not be given a dangerous chemical to poison them and their unborn child – they should be offered real choices, including the option of support for keeping their unborn child,” Ms Francis said.
ACL is alarmed that Ms Plibersek has associated herself with the Parliamentary Group on Population and Development – the host of today’s event – which holds extreme views about aborting the disabled to save money from the disability services budget (see their
to Senate Standing Committee, p. 10).
ACL is also concerned that the abortion debate has been dragged into the unseemly debate about sexism and misogyny in the Parliament.
“For Tony Abbott or any other person to be shut down in this debate about the health of women and life of unborn children and be labelled as ‘anti-women’ is a suppression of free debate,” Ms Francis said.
MR: ACL welcomes federal funding for Queensland Tenant Advice and Advocacy Service
· October 03, 2012 10:00 AM
Wednesday, 3 October 2012
The Australian Christian Lobby has welcomed the announcement by the federal Labor Government that it will provide emergency funding for the Queensland Tenant Advice and Advocacy Service (TAAS).
The announcement means that the Service, which provides assistance and advice to 80,000 Queensland households each year, will be able to continue helping vulnerable tenants after Premier Campbell Newman announced that the State Government was withdrawing all funding.
“This important service assists some of society’s most vulnerable families right across the state,” ACL Queensland Director Wendy Francis said.
“Some budget cuts may be necessary to address Queensland’s economic woes but TAAS provides an essential service which actually saves the government money in the long run by keeping people in private residences and reducing the need for public housing,” she said.
The ACL commends the role played by Federal Labor Member for Blair Shayne Neumann in securing the funding.
“Mr Neumann recognises the importance of this service in preventing homelessness and federal Labor is to be commended for ensuring it can continue,” Ms Francis said.
MR: Injecting illicit drugs is never safe
· October 03, 2012 10:00 AM
Wednesday, 3 October 2012
The Australian Christian Lobby has welcomed the Victorian Government's rejection of calls for a drug injecting trial in Melbourne.
ACL Victorian Director Dan Flynn said injecting illicit drugs is never safe and that Community Services Minister Mary Wooldridge was right to stick to the Government’s election promise to oppose such a trial.
Mr Flynn said that
by Drug Free Australia into the Sydney supervised injecting facility found that for every user injecting in the “safe” rooms they inject elsewhere a further 34 times.
“Given that every injection is dangerous the proposed facility would not offer any effective protection.”
“Reduction in drug trafficking and drug related crime will only be achieved by rehabilitating addicts towards drug free status, not maintaining them in their addiction,” Mr Flynn said.
“The Sydney facility is estimated to cost in excess of $2.5m a year to run. That money would be more appropriately spent on programs to get addicts off drugs, including funding drug rehabilitation beds.”
A report by Dr Andrew Byrne in 2006 (cited in the Drug Free Australia report, p. 2) into the Sydney facility reveals that drugs regularly injected included heroin, ‘ice’ and cocaine.
Mr Flynn said that there was little evidence from assessments of the Sydney facility that drug users had been effectively referred to programs that helped them end their addiction.
“The message that injecting rooms send is that injecting is ok and can be safe. This is not a message we should be sending out to Victoria’s young people,” he said.
Drug Free Australia’s
of the Final Report of the Evaluation of the Sydney Medically Supervised Injecting Centre (MSIC) reveals that the “overdose rate in the injecting room was 36 times higher than on the streets of Kings Cross."
Australia is obliged by International treaties to reduce demand for illicit drugs.
The United Nations International Narcotic Control Board, in a 2001
“. . . the operation of such facilities, where addicts inject themselves with illicit substances, condones Illicit drug use and drug trafficking and runs counter to the provisions of the international drug treaties.” (Para. 559)
Apart from the one facility in Sydney, no other Australian State or Territory has supported injecting rooms.
“The AMA should not be supporting such initiatives but instead investigating ways to treat and rehabilitate drug addicts,” Mr Flynn said.
“The Victorian Government should investigate the successful Swedish approach to illicit drugs. Key elements of the Swedish model are mandatory drug rehabilitation for those found addicted to drugs and strong policing of street selling.”
MR: Three year campaign to redefine marriage fails to persuade Parliamentarians
· September 28, 2012 10:00 AM
Friday, September 28, 2012
Last night’s failure in Tasmania of yet another same-sex marriage bill is further proof that the Greens and gay activists have failed to persuade Parliamentarians of the merits of redefining marriage.
Australian Christian Lobby Managing Director Jim Wallace said State and Federal politicians should now be allowed to get on with the business of government instead of continually being distracted by the Greens’ tactic of legislation by fatigue.
“Despite three years of favourable media coverage, co-opting celebrities, three Federal Parliamentary inquiries and numerous bills, the activists have failed to persuade elected representatives of the merits of such a radical cultural change,” Mr Wallace said.
“Parliamentarians in Canberra and now Tasmania have carefully considered the consequences of redefining marriage over the past three years and are not persuaded.
“The Greens and the activists should respect their considered decision and now allow governments to govern.”
MR: Decisive Senate votes 41-26 in favour of keeping the Marriage Act intact
· September 20, 2012 10:00 AM
For release: Thursday, September 20, 2012
Australian Christian Lobby Managing Director Jim Wallace said today’s 41-26 vote in the Senate against same-sex marriage means the Parliament has now expressed a decisive view on the matter.
“The Greens should respect the wishes of the Parliament and drop their remaining two bills.
“Everyone has had enough of this debate,” Mr Wallace said.
“It has been one of the most vitriolic campaigns I have ever seen and it has demonised so many good people out of the public square, such as Victoria’s chief psychiatrist Kuravilla George, who lost his job as a member of Victoria’s Equal Opportunity Commission because he supported marriage.”
Mr Wallace repeated calls for Attorney General Nicola Roxon to defend the Commonwealth Marriage Act against Greens moves in State Parliament to introduce competing same-sex marriage bills.
“It is not in the interests of the nation to have a hodge-podge of marriage laws.
“The Greens and gay activists should respect the Commonwealth’s marriage power instead of continually abusing the processes of state and territory legislatures to achieve a rolling campaign for homosexual marriage.
“They have had a fair go, it is time to move on,” Mr Wallace said.
MR: ACL welcomes end of marriage debate
· September 19, 2012 10:00 AM
Wednesday, 19 September 2012
The Australian Christian Lobby has thanked all MPs who supported marriage in today’s vote in the House of Representatives.
ACL Managing Director Jim Wallace said it had been a long debate and he believed the vast majority of Australians were keen to move on.
“I would like to thank the Opposition for keeping its election promise and for all those members of Labor who, as a matter of conscience, voted to ensure that marriage remained between a man and a woman,” Mr Wallace said.
MR: Leading UK QC warns teachers who refuse to teach gay marriage will be sacked
· September 11, 2012 10:00 AM
Tuesday, 11 September 2012
The Australian Christian Lobby has renewed its concern about the consequences of same-sex marriage after a
senior UK QC advised
that teachers could possibly be sacked for refusing to endorse it in the classroom.
An expert on religious freedom and human rights, Aidan O’Neill also advised that parents would not be able to pull their children out of lessons if they object to them being taught about gay marriage.
“It is naïve for our government to think that religious freedom would not be challenged in Australia if the definition of marriage is changed,” ACL’s Managing Director Jim Wallace said.
Not only does Mr O’Neill mention the influence it would have on education systems, he also refers to the most serious consequence being felt within the church where vicars and priests could be taken to court if they refuse to conduct a gay marriage ceremony.
“The Government must bring this issue to a head through a vote in the Parliament next week,” Mr Wallace said.
“It is totally irresponsible for a government to create a legal vulnerability to people in the exercise of their fundamental human right of religious freedom and conscience.”
MR: Christian leaders urge Parliament to protect the definition of marriage
· September 10, 2012 10:00 AM
Sunday 9 September 2012
With Parliamentary debate on marriage beginning again tomorrow in Canberra, 19 of Australia’s denominational leaders and 267 other church leaders have urged the Parliament to protect the Marriage Act.
The leaders have signed a joint statement calling for the Act to remain unchanged.
There are four bills to change the definition of marriage before the Parliament, two of which are expected to be voted on in coming weeks.
“Marriage is the lifelong commitment and faithful union of one man and one woman. As such, marriage is the natural basis of the family because it secures the relationship between biological parents and their children,”
The statement says.
Joint Statement on the Significance of Marriage
Marriage is the lifelong commitment and faithful union of one man and one woman. As such, marriage is the natural basis of the family because it secures the relationship between biological parents and their children.
As Christian leaders representing different denominations or churches, we join together and affirm our shared commitment to promote and protect marriage. We honour the unique love between husbands and wives; the vital place of fathers and mothers in the life of children; and the corresponding ideal for all children to know the love and role modelling of a father and mother.
Marriage thus defined is a great good in itself, and it also serves the good of others and society, as it has done for thousands of years. The preservation of the unique meaning of marriage is therefore not a special or limited interest, but serves the common good, particularly the good of children.
We call on Parliament to:
protect this definition of marriage in Australian law, and
not change the meaning of marriage by adding to it different kinds of relationships.

ACL declines Kennett offer to replace PM at conference
· September 08, 2012 10:00 AM
For release: Saturday, September 8, 2012
The ACL has politely declined Beyondblue chairman Jeff Kennett’s offer to replace the Prime Minister at its National Conference.
Mr Wallace said Mr Kennett had also been the victim of aggressive gay activist bullying after he wrote a column in the Herald Sun saying: “
there is no substitute for parents of both genders
“Unlike Mr Kennett, who
funding was threatened
, ACL stands by its principles that kids should wherever possible have the opportunity to be raised by their biological mother and father,” Mr Wallace said.
“I’m not sure what purpose would be served in having Jeff Kennett speak. This is a man who compromised his principles in the face of the aggressive gay activist campaign against him,” Mr Wallace said.
“At ACL truth is not something to be compromised for political or financial favour.”
MR: PM’s withdrawal from ACL conference a blow to constituency, win for aggressive gay activists
· September 06, 2012 10:00 AM
Thursday 6 September 2012
The Prime Minister’s decision to withdraw from the Australian Christian Lobby’s national conference is based on inaccurate media reporting and misrepresentation by gay activists.
Australian Christian Lobby Managing Director Jim Wallace said the decision would come as a deep disappointment to Australia’s Christian constituency.
“This is a victory for the relentless campaign of demonization against anyone who would challenge the gay activists’ agenda in the public square.”
Mr Wallace said at no stage did he say that “smoking is healthier than gay marriage”, as reported by some media.
“What I did say is that heterosexual sex and homosexual sex are different and have different health consequences. They should not be packaged the same way as marriage because, as just one of many reasons, they are different.
“If we warn against smoking because it carries health dangers, we should also be warning young people in particular about activity which clearly carries health risks,” Mr Wallace said.
“The experience in places like Massachusetts is that it is very difficult to have this conversation where the lifestyle is held to be the equal of marriage.”
Mr Wallace rejected the characterisation of himself and the ACL as heartless.
“This is a blow to free speech of which there will be even greater pressure if the definition of marriage is changed,” Mr Wallace said.
“It is disappointing that the Prime Minister has acted so hastily on the basis of misreporting and false information from gay activists.”
