In September, we celebrated a big win in the battle to preserve marriage – a win only made possible by the support of people like you.

Earlier this year we asked you to make a submission to the Senate inquiry into recognising overseas same-sex marriages. This was an important inquiry for the future of marriage in Australia. The Recognition of Foreign Marriages Bill is a backdoor attempt to redefine marriage. In fact, that’s exactly what former Senator Sue Boyce said about an almost identical bill last year.

That’s why we took this inquiry so seriously and it’s why we’re so thankful to the more than 42,000 people who signed ACL’s submission to the inquiry. As well as your submissions, ACL Managing Director Lyle Shelton joined other marriage advocates at the public hearing in Melbourne to give evidence.

Your support has helped to preserve the legal definition of marriage. In September, the Senate inquiry handed down its report into the Recognition of Foreign Marriages Bill. The report recommended that the Senate should not pass the bill. This is a huge win! Thank you so much for making a stand for marriage, and helping the voice for values be heard by our politicians.

However, we cannot grow complacent. This is just one of a number of bills in the parliament that seeks to redefine marriage. We need to work together to continue making the positive case for preserving marriage – a natural, timeless and sustainable institution that secures a better future for our society.

Please continue to pray for our nation and for ACL. Please pray that we will be able to continue to mount a persuasive and effective argument for the preservation of marriage for future generations.
