Moves to place tougher restrictions on donations to political parties will lead to greater transparency and integrity in Australia’s system of government, according to the Australian Christian Lobby (ACL).
ACL Managing Director Jim Wallace has welcomed the Federal Government’s announcement that it will introduce a cap on amounts donated to political parties and will cut the size of donations which must be publicly disclosed from $10,000 to $1,000.
“It is crucially important that political parties operate in the interests of the people they serve, rather than the interests of those who give them the most money,” Mr Wallace said.
“Political parties should function according to ideas and policies which are developed for the good of Australia. It undermines our political system if people and organisations are able to buy undue influence.”
Mr Wallace said that in order for the Federal Government’s tougher measures to be effective the Government will also need to work to ensure that people comply with the intent of the measures rather than finding new ways to circumvent the system.
