The Australian Christian Lobby today called on the Australian Government to take urgent action to help address the world’s escalating refugee crisis.
ACL Managing Director Lyle Shelton said it was important the government address the growing humanitarian crisis as part of its response to the ISIS threat.
“The Australian Government has clearly taken the ISIS conflict very seriously,” Mr Shelton said. “Now it is time for Australia to take the humanitarian crisis seriously.
“Millions of people have been displaced by the conflict. This is the greatest humanitarian crisis since the Second World War.
“Australia must urgently increase our humanitarian intake as part of an international effort to address this emergency.
“The Howard Government was able to provide assistance to refugees during the Kosovo conflict. That was a mark of a good, responsible government.
“The current situation is even more serious than that posed by the Kosovo conflict and the imperative for action is greater.
“The time for action is now. The world cannot afford wealthy, peaceful nations like Australia to delay any longer.”
