Why be part of the pro-life movement?

Why should you be part of the pro-life movement when it could cost you your reputation, comfort, time, energy, and money?

In this modern world we’re told the best thing we can do is serve ourselves. “Autonomy” and “choice” is at the core of the pro-choice movement.

And autonomy is all that is left to justify it.

There was a time when pro-choice activists used science as an argument for abortion. They’d say, “An embryo is just a clump of cells.” But we know now from science that an embryo is a whole, unique, living, human being.

We know an embryo has its own DNA and blood type distinct from its mother. We know its heart beats at four weeks. We know it feels pain at 16 weeks and is viable at 22 weeks. Nobody can argue science anymore.

Pro-choice activists argue that abortion is health care. But now we know an embryo is a human being; it must be protected. The Hippocratic oath says, “First, do no harm.” Killing is not health care.

Dr Ben Carson, a renowned surgeon, said,

“I’ve had the privilege of operating on babies that are 25-28 weeks gestation. I can guarantee you that they can feel and react. You have to give them anaesthesia if you’re going to cut them. They also respond to comfort and warmth. For somebody to say they’re a bunch of cells is totally ignorant.”

Pro-choice activists argue that abortion is compassionate. But there’s no compassion for unborn babies, and their so-called compassion for women is false because it’s based on a lie. Laurie, who had an abortion, said,

“I wake in the middle of the night thinking I hear a baby crying. I simply miss my baby. I constantly wake up wanting to nurse and hold my child. That’s something the doctor never told me I would experience.”

By participating in the pro-life movement, you participate in an act of love for women, children, families, and society.

To love is to act at cost to oneself to serve others. The pro-life movement is about action. We speak, rally, pray, vote, volunteer, and support charities that help women and children.

The Good Samaritan was Christ’s example of loving our neighbour. He cared enough to notice the problem. He took the time to attend to it, he took a risk, and he gave of his own resources to help.

Costly involvement in the pro-life movement includes all of those things.

Together, we strive to serve others by exposing the fact that abortion is the intentional killing of an innocent human being… and it’s killing our culture.

Helping people understand that truth is costly—but it’s worth it.

It’s worth it on a personal level. The existence of a pro-life voice in any community means individual women and men will encounter the truth.

It’s worth it on a political and cultural level. In September 2019, Sydney held two large pro-life rallies. Politicians saw that activism and it directly impacted political discussions in the months that followed.

It’s worth it on an eternal level. U.S. Congressman Henry Hyde famously said he believed that on Judgement Day…

“Those in the pro-life movement will not be alone… there will be a chorus of voices that have never been heard in this world – but are heard beautifully and clearly in the next world – and they will plead for everyone who has been in this movement and say to God, ‘Spare him, because he loved us.’”

I used to think this quote was largely poetic but now I see it has a great deal of truth in it. Jesus told us to use our earthly resources to, “make friends who will receive you into eternal dwellings” (Luke 16:9).

That’s what we do in the pro-life movement. Babies lost from abortion aren’t heard in this life. But there is a place where they are heard and they’re all our friends. We can look forward to meeting them in paradise.

Friend, what you do changes things. It changes people. It changes culture. It changes eternity!
